Education Then and Now —

Earlier teaching meant that we would go to a school, a classroom, a college and a teacher would teach us there. It also meant that to go to a good college, we would have to far off, if we are in a village or a place where there no good schools and colleges, then we would have to leave everything and go somewhere far off. There the fees might be high, you might not get admission, so it was really hard to get high quality education.

But because of the pandemic and lockdown, education exploded, Now you can learn through your phone and sitting at home from the world’s best teachers, not just course but many other life skills too that are important.

You can learn how to be a good cook, how to speak confidently, how to manage people, sales and marketing skills, how to sing, how to paint, you can learn anything that you always wanted to but you were not able to because those teachers were not available around you.

So, in this article we will see that if you are interested in teaching then how can you make it into your business, your profession? 5 Steps towards earning around $750 a month by teaching.

1. Identify Your Skill —

Identify Your Skill

Identify what it is that you know that the world wants to learn.

Do not hesistate please. Many people underestimate themselves, they say, “I know nothing, there are so many talented experts out there”, no, do not think this, think about something that sets you apart. Think about something that you bring to the table which few people can.

It could be your energy, your experience, your motivation, the fact that you are young and you see the world in a different way, anything like that.

I am not the only enterpreneur in India who did a start-up but why am I able to teach people about start-up? Because I genuinely want people to do start-up. That’s why, with that emotion and enthusiasm, when I take the course of how to do a start-up, people can make it out and I hope that people then feel that, “He is doing this with so much energy and passion and I am also getting that inspiration and motivation to do a start-up”. And that is my super power, that is it, it is not like I know a lot but there are enough and more people who know just as much but maybe do not bring the same energy. Even you have to decide that .

2. Defining Target Audience —

Defining Target Audience

After identifying the skill, ask yourself a very important question,

Which people will benefit from this knowledge?
Who are my target audiences?

For this will have to do some research for this, please do not assume.

I will take example of my friend, when he started his start-up course, he was thingking which people would like to take this start-up course and he felt that the only people who would want this start-up course are people who are already founders. They are doing their own start-up, its becoming difficult, it is not so easy so they would like to listen and learn from an experienced founder.

But surpsisingly, 60% of his audience are people who are students. Students who have never done a start-up but they want to. In fact only 10% of his course audience are founders, other 30% are working professionals who are fed up of their work or have a desire for start-up, so they want to learn what all goes in to making a start-up happen.

If he had not done that research, which he did before launching the start-up course then he would have gone chasing founders and he would have taken absolutely opposite direction.

That is the journey which you have to undertake as well, a journey of research, lots of evaluation, conversations, ask a lot of people.

3. Designing Your Course —

Designing Your Course

Third, after identifying what you will teach and who you will teach, then comes the most important and the hardest part, designing the whole course.

Now this will happen through trial and error and for this you will have to take a lot of demo classes, a lot of free classes.

It is almost like stand-up comedy, where you have made up a joke in your mind but, you do not do stand-up comedy, I am just saying I think this is the way it would happen, so you have thought of a joke but you do not know how that joke will be delivered, you do not know if people will laugh, you do not know if the people you were targeting will laugh or not so, you have to try these things on them and that is why you will have to try these.

Should it be a live class?
Should it be an recorded class?
Should it be a mix?
Should it be a presentation led course?
Will you be speaking through the screen?
Should there be assignments or not?
Can you make group in it or not?
Can 100 people take it at one time or not?
Will it work if more than 25 people join it together?

All of these nuances have to be figured, all of these things have to be determined and this will be possible only if you genuinely take it as a practice session.

Last year in 2020, April, May June, three months, I also took 10 such classes. “Pay what you want”, I did not intend to make any money from anyone, I was genuinely trying to learn what is working and what is not, why and how. Many people paid just a rupee; I was not complaining at all. I was learning from them, their feedback was telling what am I doing right and what am I not doing right.

And after those 18 classes, I got a good clarity that If I will make any course, then what will be its components, how to deliver it and how to price it. Since it was “Pay what you want” so I got an idea about the value people gave it.

4. Selling Your Course —

Selling Your Course

You have determined the topic of your course, your target audience and you have the method of delivery, now comes the selling part, that is a different art.

It is a different journey which I think every one should take anyways. How to sell it prehaps the most important skill that anyone will have in their life.

So, for this you will have to make marketing collaterals. It is a video ad? You may have seen ads on YouTube or Instagram or Facebook, those ads are changing every week or month. People evaluate, experiment and test with a lot of ads. People keep experimenting on which landing page will those ads be delivered.

So, many experiemnts keeps going on which is number 5, I will talk about it but at step number 4, your will make ads, it could be banner ads, video ads, text ads, if you send a message to your feiends on Whatsapp, that is also kind of an ad only, the way you will write it, what will be the USP, why should poeple do it, what will be the price, what are its details, all those things which will excite you yourself in an ad should be present in your ad.

This will also require trial and error, it would not be perfect the first time, doing it again and again, making mistakes, crossing obstacles will help you make a perfect ad. Be patient but it is a good journey.

5. Designing a Campaign —

Designing a Campaign

And then finally step number 5, design a campaign with your ads.

These ads will run on Google, Facebook, Instagram, if they are only video ads then YouTube, Instagram, Facebook.

For instance, my ads run on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook. And for the first few did it myself. Whatever community I made on LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, I told them about my courses. I ran my own campaign on Google and Facebook.

If you are not aware of digital marketing then please do a course, it is a very important skill to have, useful skill to have. It does not cost much, only $6, you will understand the basics in 6–7 hours. After that you will improve only if you do it by yourself, it is not a rocket science, it is not complicated but it is important to do it.

What you will then get through this campaign, is an ROI measurement, that how much investment can return you how much money. I can give you a ballpark, that on a small scale if you invest $1 then you can get $2–$3 and that should be your goal. To do this and to reach at this point, you must know digital marketing.

If this 5th step is scaring you then people do not be scared because iltimately this step will only help you to make a course into a business.

Maths and ROI Calculation —

Now maths approximation, suppose you are selling this course for $4, it is a 5 hour course, the price is very less. If the course content is good, If you are teaching well, if you are delivering well, then many people will readily pay $4 for 5 hours. So now since this course is for 5 hours, you can take classes from Monday to Friday, you can take a break on Saturday and Sunday, then you can 4 such classes.

Suppose you take 20 students in each class, not more than that, it will be small class, there would not be much pressure also of getting a big audience and all that, and if possible, if you have some time, you are studnet or a freelancer, or you not working right now, then maybe you can take 2 classes every day, which means in a week you will take 10 classes and in a month you will take 40 classes. If you do this math, $4 to $5 per course, 20 students per course, a course of 5 days means 1 week, you will take 2 classes everyday which means in a month you will be able to make 8 batches, you will end up making $750 a month. Your marketing cost to accomplish this should not be more than $300. And that means as a profit, you should make $300 spending just 2 hours a day.

Now, if you increase your course price from $4 to $7,
or if you increase the class size from 20 to 30,
or if you increase your teaching hours from 2 hours per day to 4 hours per day,
then you could easily be making anywhere between $7000 a month, teaching and it is only possible because the world has changed.

My Closing Thoughts —

Friends, please do not dismiss what you know. Each person definitely has something hidden inside which is important for others to know and it will only benefit them if they know it. Do not dismiss yourself. Please, present yourself to people as a teacher, as an instructor, as an guide. You will be surprised at how much the world will love you.
